He'd been summoned once again to meet Ceri Glynn at ROCKET's Sootopolis laboratory. Given all their work these past few months, and his new admin status, Barnaby noticed that he was allowed one of the highest clearance levels to match Ceri's accomplishments. His trip today found him traveling to the deepest parts of the Blackstone facility.

Once the elevator dinged open, Barnaby stepped into what was now a familiar, sterile environment. Not that he had necessarily been to this particular lab very often, but these spaces all sort of looked the same after awhile. He sat on a hard stool by one of the lab benches, Sybille at his feet and his ROTOM phone hovering nearby, and waited. And waited... and waited some more.

Barnaby texted Ceri, just in case she had forgotten. Or maybe he had arrived early? It was unlike her to be late.

She’s four and a half minutes late, but who’s keeping count, right? Well, apparently Bee is. Thankfully for him, since Ceri has come to know Bee rather well this past few months and thus knows the admin has a flair for the dramatic, when she gets the message text, she rightfully decides to fuck with him. While riding the elevator down to the lab’s test chamber where they had agreed to meet, she sends the following response:

Deadpan. Towards all of it. The emoji barrage, the obviously over-the-top haste on Ceri's part. Barnaby watched from his seat - with the most unamused scowl on his face - as the researcher began her work.

"Glad you could join us." He commented, sarcasm dripping from every syllable.

What, was he really going to let the joke falter just like that? That wouldn't be very fun.

Still, they were here for a reason, all humor aside. When she presented the Z-Crystal to him Barnaby took a moment to inspect it, sliding his cobalt eyes over the jewel. Eventually, he nodded.

"It's a Z-Crystal. I have a few of my own, actually." His eyes narrowed slightly. "What are you using it for today?"

It’s all too funny to keep pretending for long, and while Ceri may often be capable of pulling off masterful acts of deceit, today she’s just not in the mood. They have work to do! So, naturally, there’s a hint of a smile when she gives Bee his response.

”To use a Z-Move!” She winks as if the admin were asking something silly, but she’s quick to further elaborate: ”Mostly, I want your Ninetales to Terastellize and then attempt to use this Z-Crystal. This machine here will measure its energy output.”

There’s a little pat given to the device in question, and as per usual, her attention turns to checking that everything is ready on her tablet. Once the Rotom leaves her phone (which she catches with ease) and enters one of the cameras, a nod is given once she confirms that they're ready.

"Simple enough. Let's get to it, then." Barnaby remarked, lifting his arm in front of him.

His Z-Ring was not a bracelet, as most models were, but modified and compacted to fit on his finger just like all the other rings he wore. In fact, it rested beside the band containing Barnaby's Key Stone. Quite the power he had in the palms of his hands!

Anyway, it was an easy enough ask from Ceri. With the flick of his wrist he bid his NINETALES to her work. Sybille knew the drill by now and, upon Barnaby's use of his Tera Orb, began her crystalline transformation.

Now, this is where new territory would be explored. Barnaby wasn't sure exactly how these two powers - Terastallization and Z-Moves - would interact. He supposed that was what Ceri Glynn was interested in finding out, too.

"Well, here goes nothing." A powerful light began flicking in his Z-Ring, obviously playing off the power of Ceri's Z-Crystal.

But would it work?

There’s still a certain unfading wonder about terastellization, no matter how many times Ceri has witnessed it in action by now — both in person and when constantly replaying footage for research purposes. However, the luxury of awe has long since been lost, and her mind is solely focused on their current purpose.

So, she watches as Bee’s Z-Ring activates, obviously resonating with the Z-Crystal. The latter emits energy as it usually would, but this energy does not seem to reach the Ninetales that proudly stands covered in glorious crystals.

”Interesting.” The researcher mutters, looking through her data and through the footage of the cameras controlled by her Rotom. Thermal imaging can be wonderful when it comes to this sort of thing. ”Just as I suspected…. Looks like pokémon may not be able to use Z-moves while Terastellized.”

Barnaby felt the same sort of tempered interest as Ceri Glynn, although his mind was filled with questions of why rather than possible explanations. It was moments like this where he truly appreciated ROCKET's scientists and all of their efforts teasing out phenomena like this.

"Oh? You thought this would happen?" Barnaby's lilting tone betrayed his curiosity. "Why's that?"

It wasn't enough for Ceri to simply write down her observations and leave him to his own devices. The journalist in Barnaby wanted to know what exactly was going on, why it was happening, and how they could learn from this experience.

If Ceri were aware of BARNABY FINCH’s actual profession (or the fact that he’s BARNABY FINCH, for that matter), she would joke about how he sounds like he’s doing one of the interviews in his talk show. But, since Ceri isn’t aware and has only ever watched a few segments that interest her, that joke doesn’t come to mind at all.

She’s too preoccupied with looking through readings anyway, aware that the Rotom is still recording.

”So, like… uhm… you read the reports from the Meteno expedition, right? Z-Moves didn’t really work on the crystals there, so that led me to theorise that terastellized pokémon might not be able to use them either. Terastal crystals have their own energy signature, which seems to be incompatible with the radiation of Z-Moves. It’s almost like they repel each other, or-...”

She pauses, looking at Bee. Here’s where things venture further into the field of physics than biology, and as much as Ceri has spent long years researching the different forms of energy that affect pokémon, she’s well aware that Bee has not.

”Think of it kind of like a radiation protection suit, yeah? The crystals create a barrier that prevents the radiation from the Z-Crystal from reaching your Ninetales. I imagine that if she had eaten a Passho Berry, it would have a similar effect. As long as Terastallization is present, no Z-Move can be used.”

He listened as she explained her reasoning, all hints of their earlier joking gone from his expression.

"Now that is interesting." Barnaby agreed, stroking his chin in thought. As per usual, his mind was already reeling with thoughts of how ROCKET could best utilize this information.

In particular, could they come up with a way to negate the protective effects of the tera crystals? He could only imagine how powerful an attack bolstered by both Terastallization and a Z-Crystal would be.

"Well! Keep up the good work, Ceri. If you don't need anything else from me, I'll leave you to organize your data and whatever other science stuff you need to do." With that, he started for the elevator door, but not before throwing a hand up over his shoulder. "See ya later."

"—organize your data and whatever other science stuff you need to do." Ceri echoes, her eyebrows raising into perfect arches. The slightest of smiles begins to form at her glossy lips, growing more and more with each passing second. "Ah yes, of course... Don't you worry, Admin Bee, I will do The Science T-M... So much science... You don't even know... Like...Wow."

The smile becomes a grin, and she laughs, unable to keep up the act. As seriously as Ceri takes her work, she will never be above teasing and a few jokes, especially when it comes to people she likes. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not. Regardless, she gets the job done.

As proof, after she gives Bee a smiling "Have a happy New Year, and see you next week!", she compiles all the data and footage from her Rotom's camera, writing a detailed report that is then filed and sent to both the M.A.G.M.A Division and Cillian Quinn, her mentor and direct superior.
